There is much to be said for all three! My old treble ,which is plastic and painted to look like wood, has had years of wear. The wood effect paint has worn off around the most used holes. I took the plunge and bought a pre-owned wooden one, secretly imagining someone else having played amazing music for years on it, and that perhaps this ability might somehow permeate to me… I started to play it. I kept making mistakes, it weighed much more , I was sure! (only 2oz more as it happens.) I wondered if I had done the right thing. I finished my practice on my lovely old scratched recorder, that felt comfortable in my hands… and I resolved to ask my tutor to play something on the “new” one.
It came to life, I was amazed, and totally inspired, and now find it hard to put down! There is no doubt that a brand new recorder is lovely, with its clear sound and the feeling that it is yours alone , but I am quite sold on the pre-owned /pre loved option now.
